Operation Hope Funds

Helping York County Families and Organizations

Why Give Away Tootsie Rolls?

For three months of the year, we stand outside Food Lion, Bi-Lo, Walmart, and anywhere else that will have us and essentially give away Tootsie Rolls in exchange for donations of whatever amount shoppers are willing to put in our collection containers. And all that planning and hours of service eventually come down to the one night in May of each year when we get to take the money collected in those containers and do some good with it by helping the developmentally and intellectually disabled families and the organizations that serve them.

Grand Knight, Brian Garscadden thanked Operation Hope Chairman, Rene Zayas, as well as the Knights who volunteered in this campaign to make this year’s Operation Hope such a success.

Rene Zayas presented checks to York County Special Olympics, left, in the amount of $1000; to York County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs, below, for $670; and to Family Connections (not represented) also for $670 . . . a total of $2340 collected for “just giving out some Tootsie Rolls.”

At this same meeting, Brian thanked Joe Berger, this year’s Director of Family Life for a job well done in planning the monthly social events for Knights, their spouses and other family members.  It’s been a fun year!

As part of the evening’s program, certificates were also given out for Knight of the Month and Knight Family of the Month

The balloons pictured, by the way, were in celebration of Father Joseph Wahl’s 80th birthday. Unfortunately, some last minute details of the next day’s Diamond Jubilee celebration at the Rock Hill Oratory made it impossible for him to attend. But we wished you a Happy Birthday and enjoyed the potluck supper and multiple birthday cakes in his honor anyway . . . Happy Birthday, Father Joseph!
