A Legacy

Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882 as a fraternal benefit society offering low-cost life insurance to immigrant families facing destitution if a breadwinner died. Father McGivney died in 1890 at the age of 38, leaving behind a legacy that includes 12,000 local Knights of Columbus Councils (in the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan) that have donated untold kindnesses and nearly $1 billion to charity through 400 million hours of humanitarian service.

You may be interested in The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild, which serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney, as well as the process underway for canonization.  The Congregation for the Causes of Saints at the Vatican has attested that the Church's norms have been successfully met in the initial diocesan phase of the process toward sainthood.  Click here to read more and enroll in The Father McGivney Guild.
